At
some time in our lives most of us could use the services of a good listener...
Someone who is not going to "tut-tut" and say; “I don't
know how you could do a thing like that” or “I’ve done some silly things in my time but...!”. Someone
who takes everything on board without judgement or prejudice is what is needed, and most of the time a good friend or relative will
do. However, talking to even the kindest and most caring friend or relative is not the same as talking to a professional
experienced therapist, and every now and again, it is the latter that is needed. Friends and relatives can be reassuring
but a professional may be able to help you change things.
We can all experience some degree of anxiety, confusion, and depression
from time to time in our lives, and more often than not, these phases pass by and we move forward. But when these feelings
become extreme, prolonged or affect our day to day living, help is often what is needed.
You may find a
supportive Counsellor/Psychotherapist can help you through a particular crisis or a difficult patch in your life. No matter
how impossible a situation may seem, there are always different ways of looking at problems, only sometimes, because you are
so involved with that situation or issue, you cannot see the more positive options.
You may find it more helpful to talk
after a crisis has passed to think about what happened and why and how you can move on.
Counselling and Psychotherapy gives
you the space, time, and freedom to explore possibilities, to look at goals and how to achieve them, or to perhaps discover
patterns and themes in your behaviour, or lifestyle, and look at where they came from or how to change them. You could be
dealing with issues of low self-esteem, lack of confidence, feelings of isolation or being trapped in a situation or relationship you
feel you can't get out of, or you may just need to sound-out aloud the route that you have chosen to deal with something,
to check that it's the right one for you.
It’s important to realise though, that getting professional help
is not a sign of weakness. If you had a painful foot, you would seek help, therapy is just the same but for a different part
of the body. Therapy can be a last resort for some, when all else has failed, but it can also be used by anyone interested
in self-knowledge and growth, who wants to get more out of life and make positive changes to the one they have.
BACP Definition of Counselling
Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover
a range of talking therapies. They are delivered by trained practitioners who work with people over a short or long term to
help them bring about effective change or enhance their wellbeing.
Hypnotherapy is useful for a whole variety of issues, and you can find out all about this form of therapy on the Hypnotherapy page.
As a qualified Supervisor, I am also able to offer supervision to Counsellors, Psychotherapists, Hypnotherapists, Nurses,
Social Workers, Teachers, mentors and others in the caring and education professions. Supervision is mandatory for
anyone who works professionally as a Counsellor or Psychotherapist, and for others in the caring professions; this ensures support and accountability for best practice, and safeguards
the public.
